Within the winemaking landscape of beautiful southern Sardinia, alongside the historic wineries of the Sulcis area, a number of small independent producers are beginning to emerge, distinguished by limited production and a strong artisanal commitment to quality. Among these stands Arriali, an agricultural estate based in Iglesias and founded in 2018 by the oenologist Paolo Pitzolu.
The winery was established with the aim of enhancing Sardinia’s grape varieties and micro-terroirs through a production philosophy reminiscent of the so-called garagiste approach: very small quantities, meticulous selection of grapes, and vinifications tailored to each individual wine.
The Project of Paolo Pitzolu
A native of Iglesias, Pitzolu studied Agricultural Sciences at the University of Sassari, later specializing in Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Asti. He completed his academic training with an International Master’s degree in Viticulture and Oenology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Before returning to Sardinia to launch his own entrepreneurial venture, he gained professional experience in the wine sector across several countries, including Italy, France, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa.
The winery’s production philosophy is founded on the idea that wine should not aspire to technical “perfection” but rather to uniqueness — the ability to narrate the territory from which it originates. This perspective leads to a careful study of individual vineyards and of the diverse pedoclimatic conditions found across the island.
Pitzolu’s working method resembles that of a “tailor of wine”: each cuvée is composed by blending grapes sourced from distinct micro-areas of Sardinia, each with its own characteristics, in order to craft wines marked by a clear and distinctive personality.

The Territory: The Wine Region of Sulcis
The estate is located in the locality of Martiadas, in the countryside surrounding Iglesias, within the Sulcis-Iglesiente district — an area historically linked to viticulture and characterized by strong maritime influences.
The climate is shaped by the Maestrale, the dominant north-westerly wind that sweeps across the mountains and cliffs of the south-western coast, carrying Mediterranean aromas and contributing significantly to the health of the grapes.
In addition to local vineyards, the winery selects grapes from several viticultural zones across Sardinia, where soils range from volcanic to sandy-clay compositions and are often influenced by saline winds blowing in from the sea. This pedoclimatic diversity represents one of the distinctive features of Arriali’s wines.

Production and Grape Varieties
Production is intentionally limited. According to figures released by the founder, the winery produces approximately 3,900 bottles in total each year, distributed across several labels.
The varieties vinified include both traditional Sardinian cultivars and international grapes such as Carignano del Sulcis, Syrah, Merlot, Vermentino, and Moscato.
The winery’s principal range includes:
- Punta San Michele — Vermentino di Sardegna DOC
- Punta Arbona — dry Moscato di Sardegna
- Linasia — rosé made from Carignano, Syrah, and Merlot
- Arriali — red wine from Carignano del Sulcis
- Marganai — Syrah-based red
The Marganai wine recently won the Gold Medal at two of the most important international wine competitions in the sector: the Berliner Wine Trophy and Mundus Vini, in their 2026 editions. In both contests — which saw the participation of more than six thousand wines from around the world — the Sardinian label distinguished itself during blind technical tastings, impressing international juries with its balance, structure, and aromatic complexity.

Wine Tourism and Winery Visits
The winery is open to visitors and offers tasting experiences that include guided tours of the vineyards and the production facilities. These itineraries feature guided tastings of the estate’s wines accompanied by typical Sardinian products, with different formats available and durations ranging from approximately one and a half to three hours.
Wine tourism represents an important component of the project: alongside wine production, the company aims to provide an immersive experience in the gastronomic and landscape culture of the Sulcis territory.

An Emerging Reality in Sardinian Wine
Arriali represents one of the new artisanal wineries in Sardinia seeking to reinterpret the island’s winemaking tradition in a contemporary way. With its limited production, strong oenological identity, and particular attention to the diversity of regional terroirs, Paolo Pitzolu’s project is part of a broader movement of small independent producers focused on quality and territorial identity.
